SMS terms

These terms describe the text messages that Tidings & Company, LLC (“Tidings,” “we,” “us”) sends from its number, (781) 926-1235; how a person comes to receive one; and how to stop them.

What we send

Tidings sends one kind of text message: the announcement of a funeral or other family occasion, sent at the request of the family member who is arranging it, to relatives and friends she names. A person receives at most a few messages about one occasion: the announcement itself, with the name of the person being honored and the date, time and place of the services and a link to the page that holds the details; a correction if the time or place changes; and at most one note afterwards, such as the family’s thanks or a recording of the service. Every message begins with the family member’s name and ends with “Sent by Tidings & Company for the family. Reply STOP to opt out.” We never send marketing, promotions, reminders to buy anything, or anything that a family did not ask us to send.

The announcement comes as a picture message (MMS) with the memorial card: a picture that carries the photograph or the cover design the family chose, the name of the person being honored, and the dates of birth and death, and nothing else. A phone that cannot take a picture receives the words alone. The correction and the note afterwards are plain text messages (SMS).

How a person comes to receive a message

The family member who is organizing the services writes the announcement in her Tidings account. She may send it from her own phone, as an ordinary text; those messages are hers and are not covered by these terms. For relatives and friends she would rather not text herself, she can ask Tidings to send it from our number. She types their names and numbers herself and, before any number is added, confirms on screen that they are her family and friends who would expect to hear from her about the funeral. We do not buy, rent, scrape or gather numbers from anywhere else, no one is added to any list, and no message is sent to anyone except at that family member’s request. Because every message opens with her name, the person reading it knows who asked for it to be sent. The Text messages from Tidings page shows the screen she sees and the shape of each message.

How to stop

Reply STOP to any message from our number. You will receive one confirmation and nothing more. The number goes on our opt-out list, which applies to every family: no later announcement from any family will reach it. STOPALL, UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, END and QUIT work the same way. If you change your mind, reply START to our number, or email us, and we will take the number off the list. Help

Reply HELP to any message and you will receive our contact details. Replies that are not STOP or HELP are passed by email to the family member who asked for the message, so that she can answer you; Tidings does not answer them itself. Frequency and cost

Message frequency varies with what the family arranges; a person typically receives one to three messages about one occasion and none afterwards. Tidings does not charge for text messages. Message and data rates may apply under your mobile plan. Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.

Privacy

How we handle your phone number and the rest of the information a family gives us is described in our privacy policy. No mobile information will be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. We keep a phone number only to send the messages the family asked for and to honor an opt-out, and we share it only with the messaging provider that carries the text.

Changes

If we change these terms we will post the new version here with a new date.
